Memories fade, golden moments, history and erosion

I am having a break from my usual work and playing around with ideas. Here are two very small enamels on copper. They have been enamelled, stoned back, sketched onto with pencil, enamelled some more and then had flecks of gold leaf and a layer of flux fired on. I have then carefully sanded them back to create a matte and eroded look. I have always been fascinated by the idea that our memories fade and alter or perhaps even become enhanced to become those 'golden moments'. I'm not sure where these experiments will take me but will keep these two pieces on my work table for a while and think about it some more.

Stone settings and a bit of practice

At this point in the year I take a bit of time to learn some new techniques or practice a particular skill. I have decided to do some stone setting. I have quite a few interesting cabochons stashed away in a box and, although I used to set my enamels in bezel settings it is some years since I did this. Today I have made myself a ring using a very rounded rutilated Quartz cabochon that has been in my box of bits for many years. I oxidised it very heavily and this reflects in the inclusions and makes them appear more of a contrast with the rest of the stone even though they are actually quite pale.

Preparing for an exhibition

At the moment I am preparing for an exhibition of work by selected members of the Guild of Enamellers. There will be jewellery, bowls and small panels in a variety of techniques and styles and all of it for sale. It is exciting to be part of this creative group and I'm sure there will be some really beautiful things to see.

Interesting days

Today I have delivered my work ready for the joint exhibition at The White Room, Priestley's, York and also received a piece back from the New Mokume Gane Exhibition in Tokyo. I also received a beautiful catalogue of all the pieces in that exhibition and it is full of very inspiring work. I think I need to get practicing and hope that I can produce a suitable piece again in two years time.

Precious land

A few years ago I worked on a series of enamelled panels called 'Precious Land' based on the landscape around my studio.  This was followed by a collection of pieces of enamelled jewellery developed with the assistance of an Arts Council grant.  I have decided that it is time to return to this theme, been thinking about it for some time and am excited by the new possibilities as my work has definitely changed over the intervening period.

Here is one of the original pieces, enamel on copper and probably dating from around 2002.

Classes for 2013

My studio is based in the beautiful village of Glaisdale, about 12 miles from Whitby in North Yorkshire. It is a well equipped workshop dedicated to metal clay and jewellery making.  Over the winter 2011/12 it was completely refurbished, including removing a dividing wall to open up the teaching space.   There are all kinds of exciting classes for 2013 so please keep checking as you will need to book early to secure a place.

Introduction to enamel on copper £140 with Lynne Glazzard

Wednesdays by arrangement from January 23rd, 2013

Learn to create your own small copper panels, this course runs from alternate Wednesdays by arrangement and includes a small amount of copper and enamel, additional copper will be available to purchase on the day.  It is also available as either a morning or afternoon session.

Using a range of enamel techniques produce a landscape based wall panel from your own images.

You will incorporate a range of techniques including sifting, scrafitto and stencilling to produce your own personal response to a landscape that you love.  You will learn how to prepare, counter enamel and finish your copper.  A range of enamels are included in the price. No experience is necessary but some interest or ability in either oil or watercolour painting will be helpful.

A detailed materials list will be supplied in advance but you will need approximately 20g Art Clay 650; 10g Syringe type, Art Clay Silver Overlay paste

Art Clay Level 1 and Level 2 certification – Dates by arrangement and price on application – subject to the prices of kits required to make the projects chosen. These are four day courses following the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver). Seven projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the seven projects and the use of tools and equipment. The projects are assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made to the Art Clay UK Guild. If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to ‘remake’ them at additional cost to the student.

I am pleased to be able to announce some more dates and classes for the summer. This is the perfect opportunity to learn how to make your own unique piece of jewellery or to learn something about the fascinating craft of enamelling. Enamel is a form of glass and used very finely ground to apply colours and patterns to the surface of metal before firing it at temperatures around 800 degrees centigrade in a small electric kiln. I teach enamelling at introductory and more advanced levels and on either copper or on silver, including on silver clay. Other dates are available by arrangement, please email me with your requirements and preferred dates.

Plique a jour enamel in art clay silver with Lynne Glazzard £340
Saturday 28th July and Sunday 29th July 2012, a two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make silver earrings, learning the basic principles of design for plique a jour enamel and firing and finishing them ready for the second day. On day two you will learn to prepare the enamel and to apply it, firing and gradually building up the cells until they are filled. You will then give the pieces a final finish and add the findings ready to wear. The course includes small amounts of three enamel colours, enough to complete the project.

I have had a really busy week teaching so not much time to do my own work, but I do love teaching, so it has been a rewarding week! I am thrilled to announce that Tilly Wilkinson is coming to teach a two day workshop in July 2012 called Images into Enamel. She will be showing how to use graphic images, turning them into screens for printing enamels. A little bird

I have been teaching a student today, learning about cloisonné enamelling. It gave me chance to do a little tiny bird pendant, smaller scale than I usually work, this one is approximately 12mm across by 15mm length.

Flowers

I have been looking at the flowers that remain in the garden as Autumn draws in. When I view my work it is obvious that I have constantly used flowers as a source of inspiration over the years.



I love both the structure and the colours in this honeysuckle, as well as it's wonderful perfume.

Crafts at the Castle Museum York

1960s Inspired Rings

I am busy preparing for a workshop I am running at the Castle Museum York Saturday 1st October 2011. The workshop will be inspired by the Sixties Gallery in the museum. They have a fantastic collection of bright and groovy stuff. This is a photo I took on my last visit

Mary's shoes with Serena Patridge

Yesterday I had a brilliant day taking part in a workshop run by local artist Serena Partridge.  The workshop was called 'Mary's shoes' referring to an exhibition about the Weatherill family of artists currently showing at the Pannett Art Gallery, Whitby.

Serena demonstrated to the class,showing us her methods for constructing beautiful little paper shoes and we then went on to make our own versions, choosing from the patterns and papers that she had provided.  At the end of the day most of us had made two or three little shoes, each of which has its own imagined story.  

These are the shoes made by the whole group.  As you can see they are very individual and beautifully decorated (and that most people in the group actually made a pair of shoes).

Here are my three shoes.  I began with a fairly small example and made them progressively smaller.  This was a fabulous day and I would like to do this again sometime.  I wish I had made labels and a story for each of them, they do really lend themselves to story telling!

There will be more workshops at the Pannett through August.  On the 18th, 23rd, 25th, 30th August and 1st September are a series of drama workshops for children.  They are running from 1.30pm to 3.30pm and will be exploring and imagining life in Whitby for the people shown in the Weatherill paintings.

On Friday 26th August from 10am until 4.30pm there will be a drop-in workshop looking at Womens' work in Whitby during the 1800-1900s.  You can learn about traditional Ganseys and participate in rag rugging.

Micro fold forms

I have spent a lovely couple of days in my studio with Jill Leventon, a good friend and talented maker and Enameller. I have made these small copper pleated forms and it is quite addictive. I will need to try more of this as soon as I have a bit of free time, thanks Jill

Time out

I don't know where the past few weeks have gone but they have simply flown by. Last week I ran a couple of interesting workshops in my own studio; the first for a couple who spent the day making their wedding rings In sterling silver and gold using traditional techniques and the second for a couple who made some beautiful pieces in their first foray into art clay silver. I have a couple of commissions half done on the bench and am making samples for a 1960s inspired rings class that I will be running at the Castle Museum in York on the 1st October. I will try and post some pictures of them in the next few days!
