Classes for 2013



My studio is based in the beautiful village of Glaisdale, about 12 miles from Whitby in North Yorkshire. It is a well equipped workshop dedicated to metal clay and jewellery making.  Over the winter 2011/12 it was completely refurbished, including removing a dividing wall to open up the teaching space.   There are all kinds of exciting classes for 2013 so please keep checking as you will need to book early to secure a place.



Introduction to enamel on copper £140 with Lynne Glazzard




Wednesdays by arrangement from January 23rd, 2013



Learn to create your own small copper panels, this course runs from alternate Wednesdays by arrangement and includes a small amount of copper and enamel, additional copper will be available to purchase on the day.  It is also available as either a morning or afternoon session.

Sunday 21st April 2013 first day of Art Clay Silver level 1 certification

with Lynne Glazzard.  This is run by me as a four day course following the syllabus set out by Aida Corporation and can either be four consecutive days, two pairs of two days or four separate days within a one month period.  I only run this twice a year at the moment so please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested.









Saturday 27th April 2013 Landscape into Enamel with Tilly Wilkinson 




£150 per person plus cost of copper available to purchase on the day.





Using a range of enamel techniques produce a landscape based wall panel from your own images.




You will incorporate a range of techniques including sifting, scrafitto and stencilling to produce your own personal response to a landscape that you love.  You will learn how to prepare, counter enamel and finish your copper.  A range of enamels are included in the price. Copper in various sizes will available to purchase on the day.

During this 1 day class you will learn how to create your own miniature piece of enamel painting. 


You will be provided with pre prepared copper bases and a range of stimulus material to work from.


You will look at techniques for transferring  your chosen design onto the fired enamel surface prior to painting. 


Using finely ground enamel pigments you will be shown how to prepare them for your palette and how to apply them to your prepared base.


No experience is necessary but some interest or ability in either oil or watercolour painting will be helpful. 







On the weekends of 8th & 9th June and 15th & 16th June Lynne will be taking part in North Yorkshire Open Studios so the studio will be open to visitors

During this 2 day class you will learn how to create your own miniature piece of enamel painting. We will cover how to press form and prepare a suitable base from copper shim, how to apply a suitable enamel layer on which to paint and how to fire it.  In addition we will look at techniques for transferring  your chosen design onto the fired enamel surface prior to painting.  Using finely ground enamel pigments you will be shown how to prepare them for your palette and how to apply them to your prepared base.  Enamel painting is suitable for representing a range of imagery from representational portraits to abstract designs. This class would be most suitable for those who already have a reasonable level of ability in either oil or watercolour painting and some enamelling experience.

New classes

I am in the process of planning my new schedule of classes for 2013 and excited as I will be inviting guest tutors to run workshops in art clay silver, PMC and in enamelling throughout the year.

There are a few places still available on dates this year and some dates still available for one to one classes.

Saturday 22nd September 2012 Introduction to Art Clay Silver £145
(other dates by arrangement)





Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October 2012 Cloisonne enamel on art clay silver £350
A two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make a silver pendant, learning about design for enamel. On the second day you will prepare and apply wire patterns followed by thin layers of enamel, firing each layer in turn. You will then learn methods for finishing the piece to a high standard. The course includes small amounts of enamel, enough to complete the project.

Glass and art clay silver combination beads with Lynne Glazzard £360
Thursday 8th and Friday 9th November 2012 – two day workshop. On the first day you will learn to apply a variety of art clay silver products to the surface of glass beads before firing and annealing them in the kiln. On day two you will make some art clay silver beads to complement the glass beads before finishing them all to a high standard. Some glass beads are included in the course fee but not the art clay silver. A detailed materials list will be supplied in advance but you will need approximately 20g Art Clay 650; 10g Syringe type, Art Clay Silver Overlay paste

Art Clay Level 1 and Level 2 certification – Dates by arrangement and price on application – subject to the prices of kits required to make the projects chosen. These are four day courses following the syllabus set by the Aida Corporation (manufacturers of Art Clay Silver). Seven projects are made over the four day period, including rings, earrings, pendants and a brooch. The course fee includes the materials to make the seven projects and the use of tools and equipment. The projects are assessed and if completed successfully an application for the certificate will be made to the Art Clay UK Guild. If any of the projects are unsuccessful then arrangements can be made to ‘remake’ them at additional cost to the student.

Terms and conditions 50% deposit required to confirm a place, balance payable by cheque or cash 7 days prior to the first day of the class.

7 days notice of cancellation is required so that I can resell the workshop place.
In the event of cancellation more than 7 days before the class the deposit can be carried over to another mutually convenient date.
Cancellation by the student less than 7 days prior to a workshop will result in forfeit of your deposit and course fee
Each class has a maximum number of places available and a minimum number before it can run. If I have to cancel a workshop I will give as much notice as possible and a place will be offered for an alternative workshop at a future date. Refunds will be given in the event of tutor illness or insufficient numbers booked for a workshop.

New classes, new dates

I am pleased to be able to announce some more dates and classes for the summer. This is the perfect opportunity to learn how to make your own unique piece of jewellery or to learn something about the fascinating craft of enamelling. Enamel is a form of glass and used very finely ground to apply colours and patterns to the surface of metal before firing it at temperatures around 800 degrees centigrade in a small electric kiln. I teach enamelling at introductory and more advanced levels and on either copper or on silver, including on silver clay. Other dates are available by arrangement, please email me with your requirements and preferred dates.

I will also be open during the week 11th to 14th June by appointment. During Open Studios I will be demonstrating a variety of techniques during the day, starting at 11am - including making unique silver jewellery using art clay silver.

This is the first weekend of the Guild of Enamellers Exhibition at the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby.

Saturday 21st July 2012 Embellish silver beads with enamel £170
Learn how to add wire patterns to the surface of silver beads and then add enamel, firing them in the electric kiln - to make your own special focal beads. (Handmade lamp-work glass beads will be available to purchase on the day to complete your own special necklace).

Plique a jour enamel in art clay silver with Lynne Glazzard £340
Saturday 28th July and Sunday 29th July 2012, a two day workshop. On the first day you will design and make silver earrings, learning the basic principles of design for plique a jour enamel and firing and finishing them ready for the second day. On day two you will learn to prepare the enamel and to apply it, firing and gradually building up the cells until they are filled. You will then give the pieces a final finish and add the findings ready to wear. The course includes small amounts of three enamel colours, enough to complete the project.

New classes

I have had a really busy week teaching so not much time to do my own work, but I do love teaching, so it has been a rewarding week! I am thrilled to announce that Tilly Wilkinson is coming to teach a two day workshop in July 2012 called Images into Enamel. She will be showing how to use graphic images, turning them into screens for printing enamels.
